Article on New Lists

From: Glenn Fleishman Subject: Internet Marketing Discussion List yearly update Dear former subscribers of the IMDL, It's been over a year since I shut down the list, and both I and the Internet have gone through many changes. I thought I would do this yearly mailing to inform you of new resources that have sprung up to help support your efforts to interact with colleagues about marketing on and to the Internet and give you a (very) brief update of what I'm working on currently. The IMDL site is still up and running, with the archives from day 1 until the day it was shut down. I've put in references to articles about the list and a few other resources. There's also a very tiny bookstore.
IMDL archives New Lists & Sites ----------------- The lists that have taken up the torch from IMDL are Tenagra Corporation's Online Advertising Discussion List and MMGCO's Internet-Sales Moderated Discussion List. The former list started after the demise of the IMDL; the latter in November 1995. Both contain moderated, interesting discussion. (MMGCO also has an Internet-Advertising list.) Tenagra Online Advertising Discussion List MMGCO I-Sales List Al Bredenberg has set up a list with tips and advice on Internet marketing. Larry Chase's Web Digest for Marketeers Charles Sayer's Who's Marketing Online Eric Ward has been very successful with his net promotions and newswire service. A great resource for promotion and distribution. NetPOST ClickZ is a great place to find out current opinion on Web advertising And Channel 7 is the ultimate source of campaign knowledge (banner campaigns that is). Books ----- Several books on Internet marketing, advertising, promotion, and commerce have appeared, many of them recently. I'll mention a few from old subscribers to the list. (The URLs point to the titles on Amazon.com Books.) I just received Jim Sterne's excellent "What Makes People Click" in the mail yesterday; it's a great guide to Web advertising. Brad Aronson and Robbin Zeff wrote a book with a somewhat different focus earlier in the summer called "Advertising on the Internet." What Makes People Click Advertising on the Internet Steve O'Keefe's "Publicity on the Internet" came out in 1996 and is a great guide to getting some attention in appropriate ways. Don Seller's "Getting Hits" is a terrific introduction to how to hit all the bases (I wrote the foreword to this title). Publicity on the Internet Getting Hits What I'm Doing -------------- Since the list closed down, I sold Point of Presence Company, joined Amazon.com as a senior manager, left after six months to pursue less hectic work - though it was a great time there - and am now freelance writing and consulting. I finally put together a personal/professional web site in May. POPCO Amazon.com Books My site Yesterday, I helped launch NetBITS, a new weekly electronic journal that explains the Net and offers tips, techniques, and tools for better use of the medium. I'm the editor in chief and welcome letters and articles. It's advertising supported, but just a short 32,000 characters a week: digestible in one sitting. NetBITS NetBITS mail I'm also the conference chair of Web Advertising '98/New York. Conference Info How You're Doing ---------------- I hope you are all prospering and well, and I look forward to hearing about what you're all up to. Sincerely, Glenn Fleishman Moderator of the defunct Internet Marketing Discussion List and your obedient colleague
